Mission Statement

The Wellesley Chinese Language School was founded on the premise that everyone can learn Chinese, whether coming from a bilingual, “heritage” background or beginning Chinese as a monolingual adult.

While this is still holding true, we keep asking why should a Chinese descendant study Chinese? One of the most popular answers would be for the inheritance of Chinese culture. We have read much about what should be inherited, who should spread, and how to spread the culture. Yet, we seldom talked about the question why should the descendants of Chinese parents shoulder the task of inheritance. We are in the United States. Most communities do not rely on Chinese for their daily life, including study and work. There is no need in reality, thus no motivation, for the kids to study Chinese.

Hence forth, the new mission requires Chinese schools to reach beyond the Chinese communities, or even Asian communities. When more and more communities joined Chinese study, the need in reality could be created for social life, for jobs, and for the pride in Chinese language. By collaborating with local public and private schools, Chinese language will no longer be the obsession of parents. The term “Asian Parents” will no longer be the most powerful weapon for Chinese teenagers to refute their parents.
